Alabama Personal Injury Attorneys Review Basic Hunter Safety Rules

Following basic safety rules for hunters can go a long way in helping prevent injury and death for yourself and for others while out enjoying the hunting season.

  • Keep Your Firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times
  • Treat every firearm with the caution due a loaded gun
  • Be sure of your target; what is in front of it, and what is behind it
  • Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot
  • Wear a blaze orange cap or vest
  • Use a small flashlight during dim light conditions to identify yourself as a human being

Ethics Codes Are An Important Part Of The Hunting Tradition Say Hunting Accident Attorneys In Alabama

Alabama personal injury attorneys see the results of negligent and careless hunters each year when people are needlessly injured and die. By following Alabama hunting laws and basic safe hunting practices, most accidents could be avoided.

There is also an ethics code developed over the last century by American hunters which most sportsmen agree every responsible hunter should do including;

  • Respect the landowner and his property
  • Show respect to other hunters and non-hunters
  • Give respect to the wildlife and its’ habitat
  • Follow all state laws and regulations
  • Use equipment adequate for the game being hunted and be proficient with that equipment

Recently,  Jerrod Cole a 19 year old Florence, Alabama man was out hunting when he shot Matthew Bassie another 19 year old. Cole mistook Matthew for an animal and shot him in the chest with buckshot. Jerrod was charged with reckless assault, reckless endangerment, and other hunting violations.

Both men made mistakes. Matthew was trespassing on Cole’s property. Jerrod was hunting at night without a license and with illegal arms and ammunition. Fortunately for Matthew, his injuries were not life threatening. An Accident like this could have resulted in serious injury to the brain, or spine injury and paralysis. Thankfully, in this case failure to follow safety rules and failure to respect the landowner and his property did not end tragically.

Each year there are injuries and deaths associated with hunting accidents because safety rules and state laws and regulations are not followed. If you or a family member has been injured seriously due to a hunting accident it would be wise to consult with an hunting accident attorney to see if your case qualifies for compensation.
